ABOUT FESTIVAL O/MODERNT:
Since time immemorial the past has been a source of inspiration for artists in every creative field. Festival O/Modernt (Swedish for ‘Un/Modern’) celebrates the imaginative interchange between old and new by exploring relationships between the work of composers from past epochs and the artistic and intellectual creations of today. Each year our guiding spirit is a composer closely contemporary with the period when Confidencen, Ulriksdal Palace Theatre, first rose to life.
The muse for the festival’s eighth edition is the work of Henry Purcell, whose ground basses provide the creative spark for our voyage through music, art and literature. We will lose ourselves in fantasy and folklore from Purcell to the Balkans and beyond, and hear Purcell’s laments meet their modern-day counterparts, including Bob Dylan and Elton John. We will be seduced by the sexy chaconne, probe the music of the ‘fairest isle’, and forge spellbinding links between Harry and Henry – Potter and Purcell. There will be children’s events, nature walks, and insights into the ancient Mesopotamian clay in which our culture is grounded. Festival O/Modernt 2018 – ‘Purcell: From the Ground Up’.
